  How do I Start Researching?
[research]

If you have ever competed in a science fair, I am sure you have probably seen projects of which you have not even heard of half the words in the title. Most of those students probably got in touch with a research lab and have worked on a project independently.

Although they may appear limited, research opportunities for high school students are numerous. There are many ways in which you can get started with a research project:

> There are many science camps that allow you to work with a researcher and do a project over the summer

> If one of your family members or family friends is a researcher, you could probably approach them and they will be able to find an appropriate lab for you to get started on

> Otherwise, you may just want to start approaching labs on your own and ask if they are willing to have you there

If you considering the third option, you will be very surprised at the number of university labs that are open to high school students.

The key is once again to get started as soon as possible. As all the research professors are extremely busy and they need and sometimes demand that you get in touch much earlier than when you plan to get started. If you are planning on doing research over the summer you may want to start looking for a lab in January or February as you might find it is a very time consuming process.

Most of the colleges and universities in your local area most likely have a large number of research labs.

1. Browse through the websites of the local colleges and universities and look at all the research labs and what kind of research they are conducting.

2. Make a note of all the labs that interest you or that you do not mind working in. Try not to be very picky because after all you will only be working for a few weeks.

3. Email all of the research professors of the corresponding labs. In your email let them know how interested you are in their research and how much it would mean to you get a chance to work with them

4. More often than not one of the professors will email you back and will ask you to come and meet them

5. First impressions are critical. Make sure you articulate and outline your goals and ambitions of working in the lab. If you have any take any scientific work that you have done with you when you go meet the professor. They need to know that you are interested.

Once you have joined the lab, remember to keep an open mind. Dedication is very important when it comes to research. Show the professor that you really care about what you are doing. Do not worry about the long hours you spend at the lab because the rewards are worth it.
