As you could've guessed, the entire
Michigan delegation spent the night pulling nerd tricks
on each other and were pretty exhausted for the public viewing
day. Public viewing entailed busloads of local school children
coming to the hall to ask finalists about their research
and results. The public viewing day was relatively relaxed,
where finalists could wear casual attire and were not required
to stay at their project sites.
A couple of board neighbors
and I walked around the hall meeting other finalists from
around the world by pretending that we were a group of Chinese
immigrants who could barely speak English, and then later
revealing that we were just pulling a good-natured joke
on them. That night we had a special awards ceremony for
all of the professional awards given by companies such as
the Association for Computing Machinery and the American
Mathematics Society, just to name a few that the Michigan
group won.
