Reading List (part trois)
[test prep]

Longer books that allow students to write body paragraphs in SAT essays on virtually any topic:

The Fountainhead – Ayn Rand
My friend told me the book was enjoyable as well, and used to include the book in every practice essay and on his real essay for the SAT II: Writing.  Needless to say, he did well.

Crime and Punishment – Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Again, I have not read it, but my English AP teacher told us that the beginning of the book introduces roughly 30 characters.  There was bound to be at least one character who experienced what the Essay prompt asks us for.

I realize that many of the books I enjoy are not enjoyed by females.  I am not being sexist, but many of my female students suggest I point out some of the following books which appeal more to them.  Of course, I haven’t read most of them, but the literary world generally considers these to be good too.

The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
So I have read this one, and I actually did like it.  Jay Gatsby is a new-money man who is in love with an old-money lady.  They don’t spend much of their time vertically (if you know what I mean) but the old-money lady is married and that causes problems.  I remember when my teacher showed us how in the beginning, the narrator claims to be non-judgmental and then finishes the chapter with all his critical judgments.  “That is a great example of a round character.”  Anyways, I think that might have been the first time I actually learned and understood something in English class.

Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
I haven’t read the book.  I haven’t seen the movie(s), although Keira Knightly is dope.  Meg Ryan raves about this book in the classic romance You’ve Got Mail.  Something about a dude named Mr. Darcy.  There, that is all I know.Little Women –

Louisa May Alcott

Jane Eyre - Brontë, Charlotte
All I know is that this book has loads of good vocab

Wuthering Heights - Brontë, Emily

Romeo and Juliet – William Shakespeare
Girls love it for obvious reasons.  Many guys also love it too – obviously because leo dicap played romeo in the recent movie.

Here is another good reading list that I lifted from the interweb (with permission obviously)
