This competition is one which focuses on innovation, technology,
and a desire to help the future. At the international BioGENEius
challenge, which takes place in conjunction with the Biotechnology
Industry Organization's (BIO) Annual International Convention,
prominent guest speakers have been known to come, such as
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Earvin "Magic" Johnson,
and Michael J. Fox . This competition is excellent for projects
which are relevant to the field of biotechnology. As one
testimonial stated, "I think BioGENEius will definitely
be a boost towards my career development just because the
event exposed me to so many projects going on in the biotechnology
industry around the world. It is advantageous just having
the opportunity to talk with all the professionals and see
how their lives are like. Furthermore, the BioGENEius program
was an important component within the BIO Convention so
plenty of the industry leaders were made aware of our (the
students') presence and ability and hopefully the bedrock
for networking will already have been set." The advantage
of having the competition as a part of the BIO convention
makes this a unique opportunity for high school students.
Typically, the deadline for
submission of the application is around mid-February. Judges
will review the application and select two finalists from
each state. These finalists then go on to participate in
the regional challenge around March/April. There are six
regions - Northwest, Southwest, Northeast, Southeast, South
Central, and Midwest. At the regional competition, participants
will present their research to a panel of judges who will
then select two finalists from each of the regions. These
finalists go on to participate in the international BioGENEius
challenge (typically in May). The first place winner receives
a $7,500 cash award. Other awards include
$5,000 for second place, $2,500
for third place, and $1,000 for fourth
place. Each remaining finalist will receive a $500
Honorable Mention Award.
