General Description and awards and rules:
The National Peace Essay Contest (NPEC) is an annual contest
intended to promote discussion on peace, justice, freedom,
and security in today's world. Participants submit Essays
on topics that revolve around the question, "What is
our nation's place in this increasingly complex global picture?"
High-school students and foreign exchange students attending
a school in the United States (regardless of citizenship)
are eligible to enter the contest. If the high school rests
outside of the United States, then a U.S. citizenship is
required in order to participate. State winners receive
$ 1,000; the third place national winner receives $ 2,500;
the second place national winner receives $ 5,000; and the
first place winner receives $ 10,000 - a total of 53 awards!
Students who win the state contest will proceed to the national
contest. Only individual papers are allowed. Each student
must have an adult contest coordinator: a parent, teacher,
neighbor, etc. The coordinator must complete a coordinator
form and guide the student's research while ensuring that
the student follows all the guidelines.
