I live near U of M. I looked up the college and saw that only 47% of people who apply make it in. That seems a little low and my parents say that race is a small factor. Does U of M admit a certain number of each race( for example, 60% caucasian, 20 % asian, 20 % african american each year?)? Also, what should I do to make sure i get into U of M. After all , U of M's the only good college in Michigan.

I got into U of M. Smile I would say, having a high GPA, taking rigourous classes, get decent test scores, have extracurriculars. Try to make your scores within or above the average U of M score range.

Do u need a lot of awards to get into U of M? Also if u did bad on ur standardized test scores, would they still consider u if u had good gpa , etc.

Also, I took the SAT for practice in 8th grade, and only got a 1039 out of 2400. Do you think my score could be a lot higher if i took it in high school?

For me, my SAT scores were much higher when I retook them in High School. I think you'll find that true for you too. Also, keep in mind that most colleges -- including Harvard -- does not distinguish any scores above 700 per section, although 800s are pretty to have too. =)

congrats, scorpio08!

In terms of the GPA, I really think it depends on your high school, since a 98 at one school may be a 88 at another school, depending on the difficulty of the classes.

Yes, have LOTS of extracurriculars, but don't do them to just package your college resume; make sure you CARE about what you do! =)

Actually, I would have to disagree with having a LOT of ECs...it is significantly more fulfilling to devote yourself to a few, intriguing ECs than spreading your time over several other ECs that may or may not be as interesting to you..colleges appreciate this as well..they will see right through you if you list 10 clubs..membership is a bare minimum...it is often expected that you get more involved and take on leadership roles

I had SAT scores in the 99th percentile. but other than that, i have a high GPA and class rank. I didn't have that many awards and I would say my activities are mediocre.

it really isn't overly difficult to get into u of m
i could probably easily get into it, though the honors program is much harder to get in and if you have good stats ie gpa and sat's you could maybe get into an xtreme honor dorm where you don't even haf to pay tuition and stuff like that.

basically, its not hard, but to get into a really good honors program and dorm, you must have good stats

and my sat in 8th grade were horrible 500 per section, and now on my practice tests, i'm getting over 700 for everything but not an 800 yet but im trying very hard and ive burned a lot of midnight oil, if everyone burned as much oil as me, than global warming and gas prices would be severe lol.

not all b's but people in u of m i no a lot who have gotten b's with a's in high school

yeah, basically 3.75, you could totally blow it off and get in,
honestly, i think i could easily get in but my dilemma is what college to choose, to me u of m is too easy but then the ivy league seems sooo hard so i'm confused as to where to go, but i still have 2 years and ill try hard

yeah, basicaaly, you could slack and get into u of m
this kid in my class, he is such a slacker and has a 3.7 and he's like all i want to go to is u of m (he also ran for student congress opposing my stance on foregn policy lol) so basicaaly, seein your ambition, u of m would be too easy for you

er, umich is a pretty elite school. sure you can have some b's and still get in, and it is much easier to get into than the top ivies, but regardless, just because a school may be "easy" for you to get into says nothing abuot the quality of the school. I know quite a few of my friends who are going to umich this year, even though they got accepted to schools like duke, johns hopkins, dartmouth, and washU.

yeah, the only reason i dont wanna go there is because slackers liike that kid in my class go therre, therefore u of m must have a significant slacker population and its only ranked 25 by us news.
i want to attend a school where everyone studies hard as I do

are u sure you, lllll, had only a 1039? I think thats not possible, either you mean 1390 or 1030 or 1040??? because the sat only gives you scrores in terms of tens so you can get 1000, 1010 but not 1009?
but u of m is an excellent college, i neber sed it was bad, just my rep. of it isnt good cuz i no a few slackers at my school that got into u of m, id maybe go there if i were to be accepted, so its all up to you

chooosing a college is so convoluted. lol

i've finsihed appllying to u of m, basically it depends on your school, at my school its good so a 3.7 slackers with 3.7's get in, but at a regular school you need at least a 3.8 cuz their gpa range is 3.7-4.0, but i'm guarentted in cuz of my scores, gpa and i got national merit semifinalist posibly finalist , so llll, a good school like ann arbor pioneer and you can slack and get in, but a bad school like the new ann arbor high , you're gonna have to work harder and get a 3.9, i just realized this because i saw their gpa ranged to 4.0 so 26% had 4.0's or higher, but thats from an average high school, so if you go to pioneer, you could kinda slakc and get a few b's and get in. also, the ACT is eaiser than SAT in my opinion, i did bad on the sat so i have to retake it senior year, ut i got a 35 on the act so i'm content with that, so if you have terrible sat, take the act.
